How do I find JOURNAL ARTICLES on a particular topic?

STEP 1
The National Library of Medicine offers two databases for article searching.  If you are not familiar with these databases, they each provide search assistance in the form of online tutorials or help:

PubMed : Tutorial | Help | FAQ
www.pubmed.gov
Through PubMed, you can limit your search to the AIDS Journal subset.  Click LIMITS, then choose AIDS from the SUBSETS pulldown menu.

Gateway : Help | FAQ
http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov
Along with articles, you can find meeting abstracts through Gateway.

STEP 2
Search the Academy Library's Online Catalog to determine whether or not we have a particular journal.  Search the catalog by TITLE, then enter the title of the journal you need.

If we carry the journal, you can come into the Library and photocopy the article or request it through our Document Delivery department.

If we do not carry a journal that you need, we can obtain a copy for you via Inter-Library Loan.

STEP 3
You also have some other journal article searching options:

  • The Academy Library has made a concerted effort to provide electronic access to journals whenever possible.  View a list of our Online Journals to see what we have available and in some cases a journal will be available online before it comes out in print.  This can be helpful when searching for very current information.
NOTE:  Access to our Online Journals is restricted to users on-site at the Academy Library.
  • The Academy Library has several searchable journal and health information databases:
Alt-HealthWatch:  A full-text database containing information on complementary, alternative and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
Health Reference Center: A selected full-text database providing access to medical journals, reference sources, and consumer health information.
PSYCInfo: A database providing access to citations to journal articles, book chapters, dissertations and reports in the field of psychology.
Sociological Collection: A database providing access to full-text journal articles in the field of sociology and social interaction.

You can only access the databases above on-site through computers at the Academy Library.
  • On-site you can also access Newspaper article databases as well.

How do I find BOOKS on a particular topic?

STEP 1
Use the Academy Library's Online Catalog to search for materials by author, title, subject, or keyword.

If you are looking for historical information, it may still be necessary to consult the card catalog on-site to determine whether or not the Academy actually owns an item. Please contact the Outreach Project at (212) 822-7323 to verify historical holdings.

Be sure to check out the HIV/AIDS Booklist from the Outreach.

STEP 2
Search the online catalogs of other libraries to find items of interest in other collections. However, PLEASE be aware that many of the libraries on these lists are closed to individuals who are not "members" of their institutions.

Remember that if the Academy does not own a particular book, we can still try to obtain a copy of it for you through our Inter-library Loan service.

How can I find other materials like reports or consumer health pamphlets?

STEP 1
The Academy Library does not collect consumer health materials (such as education and prevention pamphlets), but we do have access to several resources that provide health information for consumers. These include:

  • Health Reference Center: A selected full-text database providing access to medical journals, reference sources, and consumer health information.  You can only access Health Reference Center on-site at the Academy Library.
  • MedlinePlus: MedlinePlus contains a wealth of health information from National Library of Medicine -- find information on diseases, prescription and non-prescription drugs, hospitals, physicians, and more from this trusted source. Information is also available en Español.
  • Grey Literature Report:  Produced by The New York Academy of Medicine Library, the Grey Literature Report provides a readers' alert to new grey literature publications as they are acquired by the Library.  Also included is a list of links to publications pages of many of the organizations and agencies producing grey literature in the fields of Health Policy and Public Health.  Grey literature is that which is not put out by conventional publishers -- it includes reports, dissertations, conference proceedings, technical specifications and standards, bibliographies, overnment publications, and more.

STEP 2
Consult the Outreach Project's list of Useful HIV/AIDS Links.

STEP 3
Search the web using your favorite search engine to see what else you can find.

Clink the links below for some sample searches using Google:

pamphlets AIDS
consumer health information HIV
reports AIDS site:.gov

(using site:.gov limits the search to only government web sites)

AIDS brochure filetype:pdf
(using filetype:pdf limits search to only PDF documents which useful for printing)

STEP 4
Consult the list of Outreach Member Organizations or the HIV/AIDS Services in NYC.  Contact these other organizations to see what materials they make available.
