Step 1 - You can use the National
Library of Medicine's Gateway
or PubMed databases to search for
articles from medical journals, as well as meeting abstracts from several AIDS-related
conferences.
If you are not familiar with searching either of
these databases, PubMed provides an online tutorial,
and the NLM Gateway provides extensive online search help.
These databases will provide you with a list of
journal citations and abstracts (if available) on your search topic.
Use the NLM Gateway to locate AIDS
meeting abstracts, formerly available through AIDSLINE.
PubMed will allow you to limit your
search to the AIDS journal subset (available under Limits/Subsets).
Step 2 - You can then use the
Academy Library's Online Catalog to
determine whether or not the Academy has the particular issue you are seeking. To do
this, simply perform a Title search, searching for the title of the journal.
(Remember that if the Academy does not own a
particular journal, we can still try to obtain a copy of an article for you through our Inter-library Loan service.)

Other journal
options...
Step 1 - The Academy Library has
made a concerted effort to activate electronic subscriptions to its journals whenever
possible. You can view a list of our *Electronic Journals for an
idea of what we have access to electronically. (In some instances electronic
versions of a journal will be available online before the Academy receives its print
version. This could be important if you are looking for something very recent!)
Access is restricted to users on-site at the Academy Library.
Step 2 - The Academy Library makes
several other journal and health information databases available. These include:
* Alt-Healthwatch, a full-text
database containing information on complementary, alternative and integrated approaches to
health care and wellness.
* Dialog@CARL, a gateway to
approximately 300 bibliographic and full-text databases and news sources
* Health Reference Center, a
database including medical journals, consumer health information sources, and excerpts
from medical texts and reference sources; and
* Resource is
available for use ONLY on-site at the Academy Library.

Step 1 - Use the Academy Library's Online Catalog to search for Library
materials by author, title, subject, or keyword.
For older materials (published prior to 1972), it
may still be necessary to consult the card catalog on-site to determine whether or not the
Academy actually owns an item. Please contact the Outreach at (212) 822-7323 to
verify holdings for materials published before 1972.
Be sure to check out the New AIDS Resources Booklist from the Outreach!
Step 2 - You can also search the
online catalogs for other libraries to
find items of interest in other collections. NOTE: This is provided for
information purposes only. Many of the libraries in these lists are closed to
individuals who are not "members" of their institutions.
(Remember that if the Academy does not own a
particular book, we can still try to obtain a copy of it for you through our Inter-library Loan service.)

If you are looking for materials other than books or journals (such as health pamphlets or reports)...
Step 1 - The Academy Library does
not collect consumer health materials (such as education and prevention pamphlets), but it
does have access to several resources that provide health information for consumers.
These include:
*Health Reference Center, a
database including medical journals, consumer health information sources, and excerpts
from medical texts and reference sources;
NOAH
New York Online Access to Health, a collection of links to consumer health
Internet resources compiled by librarians;
Grey Literature Report,
produced by The New York Academy of Medicine Library, providing a readers' alert to new
grey literature publications as they are acquired by the Library, as well as a list of
links to publications pages of many of the organizations and agencies producing grey
literature in the fields of Health Policy and Public Health.
Step 2 - Consult the Outreach
Project's list of Useful AIDS Internet Sites.
Step 3 - Try your favorite Internet
search engine and see what else you can find!
Step 4 - Consult the list of Outreach Member Organizations or Links to HIV/AIDS resources in New York City to see
what materials other organizations make available.
* Resource is
available for use ONLY on-site at the Academy Library.
